VIDEO: General Mills Anti-Gay Protest Goes Awry As Man Lights Lawn On Fire

Video footage of a gay rights opponent's protest gone awry is going viral in the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) blogosphere.
Originally reported by Good as You blogger Jeremy Hooper, the clip shows an unidentified man attempting to light a box of Cheerios cereal on fire in protest of General Mills' proclaimed pro-marriage equality stance.
"One out of every eight boxes of cereal in this country is Cheerios," the man states. "This is really the treat now for the homosexuals! And this is our protest of General Mills, because they're advocating same-sex marriages. So we are gonna torch some cereal!"
Things don't go exactly according to plan, however, as the fire quickly spreads to the lawn below as the man struggles to extinguish it.
Meanwhile, the National Organization For Marriage (NOM) recently launched a "Dump General Mills" campaign. "Your decision to pander to same-sex marriage activists has forced me to choose between your food products and my conscience," a petition, which has so far drawn over 24,000 signatures, states. "As long as food is produced by other companies my conscience is going to win out over the desire for another bowl of Lucky Charms."

Jane Lynch Says ‘Fuck Chick-Fil-A'

Jane Lynch kicked off the Comedy Central Roast of Roseanne with a jab at America’s favorite anti-gay chicken sandwich joint on Saturday, and the crowd definitely approved. Before introducing the evening’s honoree, Roseanne Barr, Lynch took a few quick jabs at the assembled roasters, which included Carrie Fisher, Katey Sagal and Ellen Barkin among others. Lynch quipped of the woman-heavy dais, "This show is serving up more old spoiled hens than a Chick-Fil-A. Oh, that reminds me... Fuck Chick-Fil-A. " Judging from the riotous laughter and applause the joke received, there were few Chick-Fil-A Appreciation Day attendees in the audience. Lynch, serving as Roast Master for the evening in her first-ever roast appearance, married her partner Dr. Lara Embry in 2010, and she detailed her story of coming out in the 2011 memoir Happy Accidents. The comedic actress was, of course, not the only roaster to take aim at a current controversy; Jeffrey Ross, who is referred to as the Roastmaster General and has his own roast-themed show The Burn debuting on Comedy Central on August 14, arrived on the red carpet dressed as Joe Paterno. The comedian explained that if the outfit offended anyone "They can do what Joe Paterno did – look the other way.” The Comedy Central Roast of Roseanne airs August 12 at 10 p.m. ET.

The L-Word' Star Kicked Off Southwest Flight for Kissing Girlfriend

A lesbian actress who starred in "The L-Word" said she kissed a girl -- and got escorted off of a Southwest Airlines flight on Monday for doing it.

Leisha Hailey took to Twitter to call for a boycott of the carrier after a flight attendant told them other passengers had complained after witnessing the affection.

Her first tweet said: "I have been discriminated against." She later added, "Since when is showing affection to someone you love illegal?"

Southwest Airlines Co. responded on its website that Hailey was approached "based solely on behavior and not gender." The airline's four-sentence response said passengers were characterizing the behavior as excessive.

A discussion followed on the flight, and the airline said it "escalated to a level that was better resolved on the ground."

Hailey was a musician before joining the cast of the Showtime drama featuring the lives of lesbian friends and lovers living in Los Angeles. She played the character Alice Pieszecki.

The actress and her unidentified girlfriend were on a flight from Baltimore to St. Louis. The kissing occurred in the air and a discussion followed when the plane landed.

Hailey said the encounter between the couple and a flight attendant was recorded.

A message seeking comment from Halley's spokeswoman, Libby Coffey, was not immediately returned.

Southwest's website says it is the official airline of the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation.

Herndon Graddick, senior director of programs at GLAAD, said in an email that "GLAAD contacted Southwest to call for additional actions beyond tonight's statement that ensure all customers feel comfortable and welcomed while traveling."

Earlier this month, the Dallas-based airline kicked off Green Day's lead man Billie Joe Armstrong for wearing his pants too low. The Grammy winner was escorted off a plane after failing to follow a flight attendant's directive to pull the pants up.

Southwest also removed director Kevin Smith from a flight last year because he didn't fit properly in a single seat. His first tweet read, "Dear (at)SouthwestAir I know I'm fat, but was (the) captain (...) really justified in throwing me off a flight for which I was already seated?"

Halley is preparing to launch a 21-city tour to promote breast cancer awareness.

Census Data: Lesbians More Likely to Live in Norcal, Gay Men in SoCal

​Last week, NYC beat California to marriage equality. (Well, unless you count our fleeting sliver of justice in 2008.) So, for one honorary week, we'll refrain from calling it New York Shitty. Though that won't stop the Onion from picking up where we left off.
Anyway, while the topic is hot, the Williams Institute, a UCLA think tank devoted to LGBT law, has taken the opportunity to release some pretty graphs showing where most gay/lesbian couples live, where they don't live, how many babies they have, etc. One odd California stat in particular caught our eye:
According to 2010 Census data, the vast majority of lesbian couples live in NorCal, while gay couples tend to gravitate toward the bottom of the state.
Oh, shit. Is SoCal unfriendly to girl-on-girl action? (No, not that kind. Obviously.)
It's no secret that same-sex couples tend to avoid the rural deserts and farmlands of eastern Calfornia -- and the folks out there made it very clear, on their Prop. 8 ballots, that the feeling was mutual. But aside from that, we're a little perplexed by these LGBT migration patterns:

​ It's important to note that lesbian couples outnumber gay couples overall. After accounting for that difference, though, the data clearly shows that girls are clustered up north, saturating counties like Sonoma, Mendocino and Humboldt with their out-and-proudness. Man couples, on the other hand, are a little more spread out. But their biggest concentration is throughout SoCal -- in Los Angeles, San Deigo and Riverside Counties.
The two groups overlap in San Francisco, but we could have told you that.
Most disconcerting is the fact that lesbian couples show up scarce in L.A. County -- one of the most popular spots for gay men. (FYI: Probably because it includes so many conservative rural bits, L.A. County actually voted majority "yes" on Prop. 8.)
So. Do lesbians feel unwelcome here? If so, this might speak to recent feminist upset in West Hollywood, L.A.'s token gayborhood, where some complain it's gotten too boy-centric. Thus the push to name itself "Boystown," and the noticeable rarity of girls' nights on the club circuit.
The trend would also reinforce the stereotype of woodsy, au naturale granola lesbians living in Humboldt and its surrounding hippie hoods, while plastic Gaga gays work on their abs/tans down south.

Glee’s Dianna Agron Calls for LGBT Acceptance

The actress who plays Quinn Fabray on Glee is making good use of her show’s filming hiatus by promoting tolerance, both onstage and on the Web.

Dianna Agron, who in April wrote a heartfelt piece about costar Chris Colfer for Time magazine’s 2011 list of the world’s 100 most influential people, has taken to her personal blog to share her thoughts on the importance of accepting people for who they are.

“Kindness moves mountains,” Agron wrote. “Acceptance opens doors, makes room for change, diffuses misunderstanding. Every day, people commit hate crimes because of misunderstandings. Hate effects the target, and consumes the person behind the gun. It is crazy to realize that we have been in war for almost our entire existence on this planet. Many times for reasons of greed and hate.”

Agron, who’s in the midst of Glee’s month-long, 42-show summer tour, also defended her choice to don a T-shirt bearing the message “Likes Girls” in a recent performance: “Many of you asked, ‘why?’ This is my response. I am not asking for you to agree with what I am saying, but if you are listening, thank you. That is all I can ask. ... I am lucky to live in a place where I can wear almost anything that I want to express myself, and that jail is not a probable consequence. Which makes me feel as if I should exercise my right to do so every now and then.”

Navy plan to allow same-sex marriage on bases draws opposition

 
Washington (CNN) -- A preliminary U.S. Navy plan to allow its chaplains to perform same-sex marriages in military chapels after the end of "don't ask, don't tell" has fired up congressional opposition.
All services are moving forward with the transition from the present ban on gays and lesbians serving openly in uniform. Top Pentagon officials are expected to sign off on the new rules and the progress of training in coming weeks.
An April 13 memo from the Navy officer in charge of chaplains says they "may" officiate at same-sex marriages or civil unions, depending on both local laws and their religious organization.
It is not clear if the other services would have a similar provision.
"Regarding the use of base facilities for same-sex marriages, legal counsel has concluded that, generally speaking, base facility use is sexual orientation-neutral," Rear Adm. Mark Tidd, the Navy's chief of chaplains, said in the memo. "This is a change to previous training that stated same-sex marriages are not authorized on federal property."
After the pending rule change was reported in the Navy Times and Stars and Stripes newspapers, it drew criticism from dozens of members of Congress.
A letter from Rep. Todd Akin, R-Missouri, to the secretary of the Navy asking him to block the change has been signed by 63 members of Congress, according to Akin's website.
Akin says the Navy's permission for gay weddings in military chapels, once the current policy formally is ended, would violate the federal Defense of Marriage Act.
"While a state may legalize same-sex marriage, federal property and federal employees, like Navy chaplains, should not be used to perform marriages that are not recognized by federal law," Akin said on his website. "My colleagues and I are calling on the secretary of the Navy to make sure that the Navy actually follows the law. As we state in the letter, 'It is not the place of any citizen of this country to pick and choose which laws they are going to obey. We expect citizens sworn to defend those laws to set the example in their application.'"
The Pentagon said in a statement Monday that the Defense of Marriage Act "does not limit the type of religious ceremonies a chaplain may perform in a chapel on a military installation." However, while the Defense of Marriage Act still stands, the Defense Department would not recognize those unions as valid marriages even if they're performed in a state that recognizes same-sex marriages.
Cmdr. Danny Hernandez, the Navy's assistant chief of information, told CNN that under the same-sex marriage proposal, each chaplain would be bound by his own religious beliefs. "A chaplain can conduct a same-sex ceremony if it is in the tenets of his faith," Hernandez said.

And he said the policy would have no impact on military benefits. When Defense Secretary Robert Gates and others announced that the Pentagon would end the "don't ask, don't tell" policy, they made it clear that benefits for spouses and survivors are a complicated issue that would require more study and planning.

"Curing" gay people? There's an app for that!

Exodus International, the notorious "ex-gay" organization, has just released an iPhone app that, according to its website, is "designed to be a useful resource for men, women, parents, students, and ministry leaders." The Exodus website further boasts that its app received a 4+ rating from Apple, meaning that it contains "no objectionable content."

No objectionable content? We beg to differ. Exodus' message is hateful and bigoted. They claim to offer "freedom from homosexuality through the power of Jesus Christ" and use scare tactics, misinformation, stereotypes and distortions of LGBT life to recruit clients. They endorse the use of so-called "reparative therapy" to "change" the sexual orientation of their clients, despite the fact that this form of "therapy" has been rejected by every major professional medical organization including the American Psychological Association, the American Medical Association, and the American Counseling Association. But reparative therapy isn't just bad medicine -- it's also very damaging to the self-esteem and mental health of its victims.

This new iPhone app is the latest move in Exodus' dangerous new strategy of targeting youth. In light of the recent wave of LGBT youth suicides, this tactic is particularly galling as it creates, legitimizes, and fuels the ostracism of LGBT youth by their families. According to a study published in the Journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics, LGBT teens who experienced negative feedback from their family were 8 times more likely to have attempted suicide, 6 times as vulnerable to severe depression, and 3 times more likely to use drugs (Caitlin Ryan, San Francisco State University, June 2009).

Apple doesn't allow racist or anti-Semitic apps in its app store, yet it gives the green light to an app targeting vulnerable LGBT youth with the message that their sexual orientation is a "sin that will make your heart sick" and a "counterfeit." This is a double standard that has the potential for devastating consequences.

Apple needs to be told, loud and clear, that this is unacceptable. Stand with Truth Wins Out -- demand that the iTunes store stop supporting homophobia and remove the Exodus app.

The NOH8 Campaign's 2 year anniversary celebration is quickly approaching and this year We have teamed up with Dolce Group to host our annual Anniversary event at Wonderland. At Wonderland your personal fantasy world is revealed as you walk down the checkerboard carpet, past the ticking clock collection and enter Wonderland. This is the only lounge in Hollywood where daydreaming is allowed and encouraged. We will start with an ope...n PHOTO SHOOT at 5pm and we will shoot until 8PM. At 8PM the Anniversary party will begin (Same Location so if you are already in...you're good) and we will begin celebrating two very successful years of putting many faces to the fight for Equality.

THIS EVENT HAS NO COVER CHARGE!!!!! We just want to bring everyone together to celebrate. The night will include celebrity guests and special performances!
